Lotitis in dogs

Otitis is a relatively frequent reason for consultation. The conduit
ear of carnivores is long and angled. It drains badly. Its wall is continuous with the skin.

It contains sebaceous and ceruminous glands which can sometimes be very
numerous in certain breeds, which predisposes to otitis.

Ear infections can be acute, recurrent, chronic. In some cases, they can lead to complications.

Several factors are involved in otitis.

Primary causes:

  • foreign bodies, grasses, spikelets, frequent in spring and summer.
  • parasites: the most common being "ear mites" caused by Otodectes (more common in
    cat).
  • hypersensitivity: atopy, food allergy, etc.
  • tumors: polyps, carcinomas, etc.
  • others: hormonal disorders.

The chronic or recurrent nature is often linked to predisposing factors:

  • excess hair, duct stenosis.
  • humidity (dogs that bathe often).
  • excess cerumen: certain races or certain individuals have a large amount of
earwax glands inside the ear canal (Cocker spaniel).
  • excessive cleaning or with unsuitable products.
  • seborrhea disorders.

During otitis, especially if it is chronic or recurrent, certain complications may occur;

  • Bacteria: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Pseudomonas, with a significant problem
posed by the emergence of multi-resistant germs.
  • Malassezia otitis, yeast frequently encountered.
  • Eardrum problems (perforation, etc.)
  • Complications otitis media (beyond the eardrum) with damage to the tympanic bulla,
    presence of polyps, etc.

The exploration of these complications sometimes requires more means of investigation.
advanced: endoscopy, radiology or even scanner.

The causes of otitis are therefore multiple and their treatment requires the identification of the
primary cause but also predisposing factors as well as the management of
complications.
