Rabies vaccination

Vaccination against rabies:

Rabies is a zoonosis, that is, it is a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Once declared, it is always fatal, which justifies strict rules on its management and monitoring.
Rabies vaccination is OBLIGATORY in France for:
  • 1st category dogs (dogs not registered in an American Staffordshire terrier, Mastiff type, Tosa type herd book) and 2nd category (purebred dogs registered in an American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiller or Tosa type herd book, and Rottweiler).
  • Traveling with a dog, cat or ferret outside of France.
She stays RECOMMENDED in France for:
  • Boarding houses for animals, holiday centres,
  • Avoid transmission by animals illegally imported into the territory.
It should also be noted that a dog or a cat incorrectly vaccinated against rabies and having been in contact with a rabid animal can be euthanized by government decision to prevent the spread of disease.

Before having your animal vaccinated against rabies, it must be necessarily identified by electronic chip (or legible tattoo made before July 3, 2011) and possessed of a passport.
The first shot can (depending on the brand of vaccine) be performed at the12 weeks old, a single injection is enough, and vaccination becomes regulatory 21 days after the date of injection.
Depending on the type of animal and the brand of vaccine, vaccine boosters can be done every year, 2 years or 3 years.

Your veterinarian completes the passport after the injection and indicates the start and end dates of validity.

The rabies vaccine causes few side effects and can prevent many mishaps, so think about it when you visit your veterinarian!
